Flex grouping
In this particular photo, students did a self-assessment on how well they understood the day's lesson. They were then assigned to work in heterogeneous groups in order to work at their own pace while students who understood less well were taught in a small group setting.
An other grouping format often used includes multilevel groups where each student is assigned a task within the group setting by the group members. These roles include recorder, speaker, teacher, and devil's advocate.
Students are at liberty to choose to work individually most of the time. I sometimes ask them to teach a friend, to discuss with a neighbor, or to choose sides in a debate where they are at liberty to change sides if they hear a convincing argument. This can be engaging for the students who have a tendency to "check out" with what they perceive as dry subject matter.

Accomodations
All lessons include customization and accommodations for certain students. For example, in mathematics, some students work more slowly and require fewer questions to demonstrate learning. Others can easily verbalize understanding but are unable to write what they know. Always, students have the opportunity to chose other ways than the traditional to demonstrate their knowledge. In addition, students who work at a faster pace have anchor activities on which they are permitted to work when a given task is complete.
